Samsung Instinct SPH-M800

Samsung Instinct SPH-M800 has an eye-catching design but it is nothing spectacular. It is a touch screen device with a thin candy bar shape with 4.57 inches by 2.17 inches by 0.49 inch dimensions. This makes the phone fatter and taller as compared to the iPhone but when you measure it on the front face, it looks a bit thinner. Samsung Instinct SPH-M800 is also quite similar to its GSM sibling, the Samsung SGH-F490. The handset weighs 4.4 ounces and it feels pretty sturdy in the hand with solid construction. I also liked the simple color scheme of basic black and silver.

The real estate of the Samsung Instinct SPH-M800 is dominated by the touch screen. You get a resolution of 432×240 pixels resolution with support for 262k colors. The screen is really gorgeous. The graphics looked vibrant, the text was crisp and the colors too popped out nicely. This is better than a lot of other displays I have previously seen. You get a few options for personalization but the font of text or menu cannot be changed. However, you can adjust the backlighting time and brightness. Also noteworthy is that when the screen goes dark, it gets locked automatically.

The display of Samsung Instinct SPH-M800 looked good but I just had one complaint. The screen is half inch smaller as compared to the iPhone. This might not matter much to you but while viewing the videos or browsing the Web, the content looked cramped. On the bright side, this display is still better than smaller touch screen of Samsung Glyde. The menu interface of this phone is attractive and easy to use. On the bottom, there are four menus – Web, Fun, Main and Favs. The 4 page menu design is effective and quite interesting. You can program the Favs menu according to your preferences for stocking it with the functions that you like the most. The main menu has features like GPS, organizer and messaging. Fun menu has camera, multimedia options and games while the Web menu holds a collection of browser shortcuts.

The menus have bright icons to show that there are plenty of different features on the Samsung Instinct SPH-M800. However, only Web and Fun menu can be customized. I was also happy about the intuitive secondary menus. For instance, I didn't have any problems while starting new messaging or for moving items in lists. The touch screen too gives nice haptic feedback to show that the device has recognized your touches.(source)

HTC Fuze – Good QWERTY keyboard

HTC Fuze has a 2.8 inches touch screen just like the HTC Touch Pro and it supports a resolution of 640×480 pixels with support for 262k colors. Text and images looked sharper and also more vibrant on the VGA screen as compared to the Tilt's display. You also get HTC TouchFLO 3D interface which HTC is now putting in a lot of their products. On the bottom, there is a toobar through which you can scroll from right to left to see all the applications that the phone has. A single touch to these icons will open up the application. I really liked this animated 3D effect, you can scroll through the messages and files by just moving your finger or thumb in up or down direction. The Home screen of the HTC Fuze phone is quite similar to that of Sprint's HTC Fuze but it now has AT&T services. The Today screen can be personalized with different background images and themes.

HTC Fuze comes with built in accelerometer which automatically changes the view of the screen when the phone is rotated. For instance, when the device is turned from a vertical to horizontal position, the display too changes from portrait to the landscape mode. This saves you some time as you don't need to go through the menus to do this manually. My only complaint here is that the screen transition could have been faster.
For giving the business users with best functionality and tools, there is a full QWERTY slide out keyboard on the HTC Fuze phone. This will take care of all your messaging needs. The feed and layout is different as compared to that of the Sprint Touch Pro. The button size is retained but the keyboard is now slicker looking and the number row on the top has been replaced by a row for symbols. The numbers share button space with letter keys on the right side and they are highlighted in blue color. The last row has shortcuts for all popular applications like Web, e-mail, calendar, etc. They layout has been changed but I didn't have any problems while typing long messages and overall, the keyboard is pretty satisfactory.

Controls on HTC Fuze include standard navigation array underneath the display which includes directional keypad with OK button in the middle, back button, Home shortcut, Talk and End buttons. The directional pad is touch sensitive and you can use the thumb in certain apps like Web browser for zooming in and out of your pages.(Source)

External CD DVD Burner review: LaCie d2 LightScribe

I've always advised my readers against using paper labels on optical media but there are still a lot of five inch DVDs burned at home with labels glued on them. The progress of ink printing technology over the past few years has been really impressive but then the ink cartridges too are relatively expensive. Using a permanent marker is a better solution for sharing the discs with friends and family but there is no other alternative to labels if you want things to look professional. Fortunately, Hewlett-Packard has come up with LightScribe technology which looks professional and is a great solution for the required needs.

LaCie has licensed this technology from HP and has put it in the affordable external CD DVD burner called d2 DVD±RW 16x Double Layer FireWire. The device burns CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-9 (double layer)±R media, and DVD-5 (single layer)±RW. The package is a bit bigger than a traditional bread toaster and the silver and red box has a grayish silver burner with six pin to six pin FireWire cable, USB 2.0 cable, blank LightScribe media, power supply. The DVD burner comes along with user manual, driver disc and Quick Install Guide.

I plugged the external CD DVD burner in to the wall power outlet and then plugged in the FireWire cord from a PC to d2 drive. The DVD ROM inside has drivers for both PC and Mac and it also has programs for creating labels.

Installing the external CD DVD burner is very easy and quick; it took just fifteen minutes for me to get the job done and I got to SureThing CD & DVD Labeler SE application. The interface is really easy, I could design labels with one of my photos from digicam put in the hard drive. I then composted curved text and it ran parallel with the disc's curve on the image. When I was satisfied with the graphic creation, I clicked print and put in the LightScribe special media.

You need specific media of LightScribe for the LightScribe burners. The DVDs and CDs come with reactive dye coating on them which change the color when infrared light is hit upon. This same laser will burn the data to standard CDs and the text and image are printed on the label side.

The process surprised me twice. First at the amount of time it took for the etching: it was about 30 minutes. I don't think that the photo details have got anything to do with it but it surely seemed like a long time. Labeling process will be quicker if you confine the label on the inner radius of the optical media. The next surprise was at the professional and slick look of it. I was impressed by the sharp detail even though it was a monochromatic image on the disc's gold surface.(source)
